“Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself” Matthew 22:37-39

God has called us to not only love Him but to love others as well. This can sometimes be difficult and confusing. We use the word love to mean very different ideas. We say; “I love ice cream”, and “I love you”.  We certainly do not love ice cream and the person the same. The world would like to make us think that what we love is what makes us happy or that we should only love what does make us happy. But the Bible has a different definition of love.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”  Phillipians 2:3-4

We should love in humility placing a higher value on others than ourselves.  Jesus is the ultimate example of this kind of love for us. He chose to suffer and die so that we could be forgiven and have life.  So how do we show this kind of love to others?

 God has made each person unique and different, that includes the way that we need to be loved.  Showing love in each person's unique way takes time and intentionality. You must first find out in what way the person likes to be shown love - we call that their love language.  Then you must find ways to show that person love in ways that speak their language. This may be a tough task, since not all people speak the same love language.
